More vaults
With Pro, you can keep more than one vault, each opened by its own pattern. One pad, one lock: the pattern you draw decides which vault opens. Paperwise never shows a list of vaults or how many there are.
What it is
A vault is complete on its own: its own items, photos, albums, notes, name, settings and recovery choice. Free includes one vault. With Pro you can keep up to 100.
- There’s no list or switcher. You reach a vault only by drawing its pattern on the pad. Someone who opens one vault sees nothing that points to another.
- Every vault looks the same. Vault settings show exactly the same rows in every vault.
- A new pattern makes a new vault. There’s nothing to “create”: draw a pattern you haven’t used, and a new, empty vault opens. It’s kept when you save something in it.
- One new vault a day. This limit keeps anyone from quickly probing how many vaults you have.
- Recoverable or This iPhone only, per vault. You choose when you save each new vault. See The vaults key and recovery.
When to use it
- Keep your most private things apart from everyday private things, each behind a different pattern.
- Keep a believable vault you could open if someone pressured you. With Pro you can also make it the decoy.
- Keep work and family papers apart.
Step by step
Make another vault
- Open Private vaults and confirm with Face ID.
- Draw a pattern you don’t use for any other vault (at least 8 dots for a recoverable vault).
- A new, empty vault opens. Add something, or change a setting.
- On This pattern starts a new vault, draw the same pattern again, confirm with Face ID, choose Recoverable or This iPhone only, and tap Save this vault.
Name a vault
Open it, tap the settings button (the gear) → Name. The name is “Only shown inside this vault.”
Switch between vaults
Tap Back, then draw the other vault’s pattern within a minute. After that, Face ID comes first again.
Free and Pro
Pro: up to 100 vaults. Free includes one.
When Pro ends, every vault you have keeps opening, with its items and settings. Only making another vault, changing the decoy and syncing vaults need Pro again.
Privacy
- Paperwise never lists, names or counts your vaults anywhere outside the vault you’re in.
- Only the limits are public: 1 on Free, 100 on Pro.
- Every pattern you draw counts as a try, so drawing patterns to find vaults is slow. See Open a vault.
Tips
- Use patterns that are clearly different from each other, so a small slip doesn’t open the wrong vault.
- Choose a name only you understand. Nobody else ever sees it.
What if…
What if it says “More vaults are part of Pro.”?
You already have a vault and you’re on Free. Tap See Pro, or add to the vault you have.
What if it says “You can make one new vault a day. Try again in …”?
You made a vault in the last 24 hours. Try again after the time shown. Restoring vaults on a new iPhone doesn’t count toward this limit.
What if it says “Couldn’t save this vault. Try again later.”?
Paperwise gives this one answer for some refusals, so it never says why. Try again later.
