Save to a folder

Save to a folder… puts a copy of a document straight into a folder you choose in the Files app: on your iPhone, in iCloud Drive, or in Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and other services whose apps you’ve installed. Next time, the picker opens in the same folder.

What it is

When you tap Save to a folder…, the iOS folder picker opens. You pick a folder, confirm, and the copy is written there. Paperwise remembers that folder, so the next save starts in it.

You’ll find Save to a folder… in these places:

Where What is saved
A document’s Share sheet, under the big Share button The file the sheet would share: the chip you picked (PDF, JPG, Long image, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Text) with its options. Several JPGs go into the folder together.
The Share menu of a note The note’s text, as a .txt file named after the note.
The Share menu of a photo or file The original file, as you added it.
Select several scans, then Share Save to a folder… saves all their PDFs at once.
A scan in a private vault, Share Save PDF to a folder… saves the scan’s PDF.

Cards aren’t offered: a card’s number stays inside Paperwise.

When to use it

  • Keep a PDF of every bill in a “Taxes 2026” folder in iCloud Drive.
  • Drop a signed contract into the shared Dropbox folder your accountant reads.
  • Put a scan on Google Drive without going through Mail.

Step by step

  1. Open the document and tap Share.
  2. Pick the format and options you want, for example PDF.
  3. Tap Save to a folder… under the Share button.
  4. The folder picker opens, in the folder you used last time. Choose a place on the left (On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox…) and a folder.
  5. Confirm with the button at the top right of the picker. You see “Saved a copy to that folder” (or “Saved 3 copies to that folder”).

To cancel, tap Cancel in the picker or swipe it down. Nothing is saved, and the remembered folder doesn’t change.

If the document is an ID, a medical paper, a bank statement or a tax paper, Paperwise asks for Face ID first, as it does for Share.

Free and Pro

Save to a folder is free.

Privacy

  • A copy saved to a folder is an ordinary, readable file. Paperwise’s encryption doesn’t cover it. Anyone who can open that folder can read it, and so can the service that holds it (Google, Dropbox and so on).
  • Deleting, editing or moving the document in Paperwise doesn’t change or delete the copy. Delete it there if you no longer want it.
  • Paperwise never talks to Google Drive, Dropbox or any other service. It hands the file to iOS, and that service’s own app uploads it. We hold no password or token for your cloud accounts.
  • The temporary file made for the save is deleted as soon as the picker closes, whether you saved or cancelled.
  • The remembered folder is kept in Paperwise’s encrypted database on this iPhone. It isn’t synced to your other devices or backed up.
  • A save from a private vault starts in the last folder but never changes it, so nothing outside the vault learns that a vault saved something.

Tips

  • For a whole set of scans, select them first and use Share → Save to a folder…: they all go into the folder in one go.
  • Some cloud services upload in their own time. Open their app if a copy doesn’t appear right away.
  • To keep file sizes down, choose Balanced or Small quality first, or use Compress.

What if…

What if the picker doesn’t open in my last folder?

Some services don’t let apps return to a folder later, and a folder that was deleted or moved can’t be found. The picker then opens in its usual place. Pick the folder again.

What if I see “Couldn’t save to that folder. Try again.”?

The service refused the file or wasn’t reachable. Check that its app is installed and signed in, and that you can write to that folder, then try again.

What if Google Drive or Dropbox isn’t in the list?

Install the service’s app and sign in. Then in the picker, tap … (More) and turn the service on under Locations.
