Email notifications
Paperwise can tell you when mail arrives at your Forward by email address. By default the notification says only “New item in your Inbox”, nothing about the message.
What it is
Notifications for Forward by email live in Account → Forward by email → Notifications:
- Notify me about new mail: tap Turn on to allow notifications on this device.
- Show the sender: off by default.
| Show the sender | The notification says |
|---|---|
| Off (default) | “New item in your Inbox” |
| On | “New item from” and the sender’s name or address |
The subject of the email is never shown, either way.
Tapping a notification opens All items on the Inbox, where the new item waits.
When to use it
- You want to know when a bill arrives, without checking.
- You forwarded something from your computer and want to know when it’s in Paperwise.
- Leave Show the sender off if other people see your Lock Screen, or if the names of who writes to you are private.
Step by step
Turn notifications on
- Go to Account → Forward by email.
- Under Notifications, tap Turn on next to Notify me about new mail.
- If iOS asks, tap Allow.
- You see “Notifications are on”.
Paperwise also asks once when you first set up your address.
Show who sent it
- Go to Account → Forward by email.
- Under Notifications, turn on Show the sender.
The setting is for your account, so it applies to all your devices.
Turn notifications off
Go to the iPhone’s Settings → Notifications → Paperwise and turn off Allow Notifications. Mail still arrives in Paperwise; you just won’t be told.
Free and Pro
Email notifications are part of Forward by email, which is Pro.
Privacy
- Notifications are delivered by Apple’s push notification service.
- With Show the sender off, a notification carries only “New item in your Inbox”: Apple learns that something arrived, and nothing about the message itself.
- With Show the sender on, the sender’s name or address passes through Apple’s notification service in readable form. That’s the only case where anything about your mail leaves our server unsealed. The subject never does.
- To send notifications, our server keeps a notification token for each of your devices.
- Hidden items never appear in notifications.
Tips
- If you share your iPad or leave your iPhone face up on a desk, keep Show the sender off.
- To see notification text only once your iPhone is unlocked, go to Settings → Notifications → Show Previews and choose When Unlocked.
- You don’t need notifications for mail to arrive: Paperwise also checks when you open it.
What if…
What if I see “Turn on notifications for Paperwise in Settings.”?
You declined notifications earlier, and iOS won’t ask again. Open Settings → Notifications → Paperwise and turn on Allow Notifications.
What if I see “Notifications aren’t available on this device.”?
This device can’t receive push notifications right now (for example a simulator). Mail still arrives; open Paperwise or tap Check now under Received mail.
What if a notification came but I can’t find the item?
Tap the notification, or open Vault → Inbox. If you just opened the app, give it a moment to download and file the message.
What if notifications stopped after I turned Forward by email off?
That’s expected: turning it off also stops its notifications on this device.
