Make an ID photo
ID photo makes a passport, visa or ID photo from a photo of a person. Paperwise replaces the background with a plain colour, straightens and sizes the head to the standard you choose, and makes a sheet of copies ready to print.
What it is
You take a photo with the front camera, or pick one from Photos. Paperwise then makes two things, both shown side by side:
- Your ID photo: one photo at the chosen size.
- A 4 × 6 in print sheet: as many copies as fit, with light cut lines. For example, 8 copies of a 35 × 45 mm photo.
Sizes (Size):
| Chip | For |
|---|---|
| 35 × 45 mm | Passports in the EU, the UK, Schengen and most countries |
| US 2 × 2 in | US passports and visas |
| Canada | Canadian passports (50 × 70 mm) |
| China visa | Chinese visas (33 × 48 mm) |
Backgrounds (Background): White, Light grey or Light blue. Changing the size or the background redraws both photos at once.
Save ID photo saves one document with two pages: the print sheet first, then the single photo. It’s titled after the size, for example “ID photo, Passport 35 × 45 mm”.
When to use it
- A passport or visa renewal that asks for printed photos.
- An application form that wants a photo file.
- A student card, a gym card or a work badge.
Step by step
- Tap +, then under Capture tap ID photo. Or tap Tools, then ID photo under Capture.
- Tap Take a photo (the front camera opens) or Choose from Photos.
- Face the camera with a neutral face, in even light, in front of a plain wall if you can.
- Pick the Size and the Background.
- Read any note under the photos, for example “Your face is small in this photo. Move closer for a sharper print.” Use Retake or Other photo if you want another try.
- Tap Save ID photo. The new document opens.
To print, open the document and use Share → Print, or send the PDF to a print shop. Print the sheet at 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) without scaling.
Free and Pro
ID photo is free.
Privacy
- Everything happens on your iPhone: finding the face, separating you from the background and sizing the photo. No photo or face goes to our server.
- The photo you take isn’t saved to your camera roll. If you pick one from Photos, Paperwise works on a copy, and the original stays where it was.
- The photo you started from is deleted when you leave the screen. Only the saved document is kept, encrypted by Paperwise with its own key.
- An ID photo is never named by AI, even with Name and sort new scans on, because it shows a face.
- To keep it apart from everything else, move it to a private vault with More → Move to a vault.
Tips
- Stand an arm’s length from a plain, light wall, facing a window, not with the window behind you.
- Take off glasses if the rules ask for it, and keep your hair away from your eyebrows and the edges of your face.
- Check the rules of the office you send it to: some ask for a white background, no glasses, or a recent photo.
What if…
What if it says no face was found?
“No face was found. Use a photo where your face is clear and facing the camera.” Try again in better light, facing the camera.
What if there are other people in the photo?
“There’s more than one person in this photo. Use a photo of just you.” Crop the photo in Photos first, or take a new one.
What if the background is still there?
“Paperwise couldn’t separate you from the background. Use a plain wall behind you.” The photo keeps its own background. Try again in front of a plain wall.
What if my head looks tilted or cut off?
A small tilt is straightened for you (“Your head was tilted; it was straightened.”). If the photo ends close under your chin, step back so your shoulders show.
Will the office accept it?
Paperwise follows each standard’s published size and head height, but each office has its own rules (expression, glasses, how recent the photo is). Check them before you print.
