The iPad sidebar
On an iPad with enough room, Paperwise turns the Vault into a sidebar on the left, keeps Scan and + at the top of every list, and opens items in a column next to the list, much like Mail or Notes.
What it is
The iPad layout has up to three columns:
- The sidebar: the same sections as the Vault on iPhone, as a list you can always reach.
- The list: All items, a folder or a shelf.
- The detail column: the document, note, file or card you tapped, shown beside the list instead of on a new screen.
The sidebar holds, from top to bottom:
| Row | What it does |
|---|---|
| Vault | Your Vault home: search, shelves, folders and More. |
| Sorted by Paperwise | Your shelves (IDs and passports, Money, Health, Home, Work and school, Cards, Notes, Photos and videos, Files), each with its count. Only shelves with something on them are listed. Tap the heading to fold or unfold them. |
| Your folders | Every folder, with folders inside folders indented under their parent. Tap the arrow next to a folder to open or close its subfolders. New folder sits at the end. |
| All items | Everything in your vault, with its count. |
| Inbox | Shown only while email items wait (Pro, Forward by email). |
| Shared links | The share links you’ve made. |
| Recently deleted | What you deleted in the last 30 days, with its count. |
| Hidden | Shown while Show Hidden in vault is on. |
| Account | At the foot of the sidebar: your plan, backup, sync, lock and privacy, AI helper and other settings. |
Shelf and All items counts never include Hidden items.
Scan and + in the navigation bar
On iPhone, Scan and + float at the bottom of every list. On iPad in a wide window they move to the top right of the list, in the navigation bar:
- Scan opens the camera straight away, as on iPhone.
⌘Ndoes the same. - + opens the Add sheet with every other way in, such as Photo, ID card, Note, Card, From Photos and From Files, and on iPad Scan with iPhone. See The Scan button and the + sheet.
Opened from inside a folder, Scan and + file what you add in that folder.
The detail column
On All items, a folder or a shelf, tapping an item shows it in the detail column. It’s the same screen you’d see on iPhone, with its own toolbar (Edit, Markup, Ask, Share, •••). The column’s bar has:
- Open full screen, to give the item the whole window (for a long read, say).
- Show sidebar, when the sidebar is tucked away.
Until you pick something, the column says “Choose a document”. The Vault home itself is a page of sections, so it has no detail column; open All items, a folder or a shelf to get one.
Step by step
Go to a section
- Tap a row in the sidebar: Vault, a shelf, a folder, All items, Shared links, Recently deleted, Hidden or Account.
- Paperwise goes there from wherever you are, so screens don’t pile up behind you.
With a keyboard, ⌘1 to ⌘5 jump to Vault, All items, Inbox, Hidden and Account (⌘4 only while Show Hidden in vault is on). See Keyboard shortcuts.
Make, rename or delete a folder from the sidebar
- To make a top-level folder, tap New folder at the end of Your folders.
- For a folder’s options, touch and hold it (or right-click with a mouse or trackpad). You get New folder inside, Rename and Delete folder.
Folders go up to 3 levels deep.
Show or hide the sidebar
- In a wide window (an 11-inch or 13-inch iPad in landscape), the sidebar sits beside the list and the detail column. Tap the sidebar button at its top to tuck it away; tap Show sidebar in the detail column to bring it back.
- In a narrower window (iPad in portrait, or a larger Split View), the list and the detail column share the screen and the sidebar slides in over the list when you tap Show sidebar. Tap outside it, or press
Escape, to close it. ⌃⌘Sshows or hides the sidebar either way.
Free and Pro
The sidebar, the detail column and the iPad layout are free. Some rows lead to Pro features: Inbox (Forward by email) and Shared links (share links). Sync between iPhone and iPad is Pro; see Sync across iPhone and iPad. If you bought Pro on your iPhone, signing in to the same account turns on sync and Forward by email on the iPad; for the rest of Pro there, tap Restore purchases on the iPad (see Subscribe, restore and cancel).
Privacy
The iPad gets the same protections as the iPhone: the app lock, Hidden’s encryption, and the same rules for what leaves the device. Hidden items never show in the sidebar’s shelves, counts or lists. When Show Hidden in vault is off, the Hidden row disappears from the sidebar too.
Tips
- When the window is narrow (Slide Over, or a third of the screen in Split View), Paperwise switches to the iPhone layout: the Vault, the floating Scan and +, and items opening on their own screen. Widen the window to get the sidebar back.
- With a mouse or trackpad, rows and buttons light up under the pointer, and right-clicking a folder in the sidebar opens its options.
- Drag documents onto a folder in the sidebar to file them. See Drag and drop.
What if…
What if I don’t see the sidebar?
Your window may be too narrow. In Slide Over or a narrow Split View, Paperwise uses the iPhone layout. Make the window wider, or press ⌃⌘S if the sidebar is just tucked away.
What if the Inbox row is missing?
It’s only listed while email items are waiting. Forward by email is a Pro feature; see Forward by email.
What if Hidden isn’t in the sidebar?
Show Hidden in vault is off. Turn it on in Account → Lock and privacy, or open Hidden from there with Open Hidden. See Show Hidden in vault.
What if Sorted by Paperwise isn’t listed?
It appears once at least one shelf has something on it. See Shelves: sorted by Paperwise.
