Translate
Translate turns a document’s text into another language, page by page, and keeps the translation with the document so you can read it again without sending anything.
What it is
Translate sends the document’s recognised text to our AI provider with the language you choose, and shows the translation as plain text you can select, copy or share. Numbers, amounts and names are kept as they are, and line breaks are kept so the layout stays readable.
You can translate into:
- English
- French
- Arabic (shown right to left)
- Spanish
- German
- Italian
- Portuguese
Your iPhone’s language is listed first.
Each translation is saved with the document, one per language. Opening the same language again shows the saved translation at once and sends nothing.
When to use it
- A letter from a landlord, school or tax office in a language you don’t read well.
- A contract you need to understand before you sign.
- Sharing a translated copy with someone who doesn’t read the original language.
Step by step
Translate a document
- Open a document and tap Ask in the toolbar.
- Tap Translate.
- Tap a language.
- If this is the first AI action on this document in this app session, a notice appears. Tap Continue to send the text, or Cancel to send nothing.
- Wait while Paperwise shows “Translating…”. The translation appears below the languages.
Copy or share the translation
- Tap Copy to copy the whole translation.
- Tap Share to send it as a text file named after the document and the language. The file exists only while the share sheet is open.
Switch languages
Tap another language. If you’ve translated into it before, the saved translation shows straight away. Otherwise it’s a new translation.
Free and Pro
Translate is part of Pro. On Free, the menu shows Translate (Pro) and opens the plan screen.
Each new translation (one document into one language) is one AI action. Reopening a saved translation is free. The screen shows how many actions you have left today. See AI limits and usage.
Privacy
Privacy: Translate sends the document’s recognised text to our server, which passes it to our AI provider (OpenAI) and doesn’t store it. Requests go with storage turned off and no user or install identifier. OpenAI doesn’t train on API data but may keep requests for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring. No page images are sent.
The saved translation stays with the document on your iPhone. Hidden items and documents marked Never send to AI can’t be translated. See What AI sees and keeps.
Tips
- Translate works from the recognised text. If the original came out poorly (handwriting, a faint print), check the Text view and use Read handwriting first.
- The source language is detected for you; there’s nothing to set.
What if…
What if it says “Translation uses AI. Nothing was sent.”?
You tapped Cancel on the notice. Tap the language again and choose Continue to go ahead.
What if the translation stops partway through a very long document?
Translate covers about the first 30,000 characters of a document’s text. For a longer document, split it with Edit → Split and translate each part.
What if my language isn’t in the list?
Paperwise offers the seven languages above for now.
What if I’ve used today’s AI actions?
The screen says so and when they reset. Saved translations still open; a new one waits until the limit resets.
