Edit pages

On this page

A scan is never final. The Edit button on a document lets you straighten a page, change its look, move pages around and add new ones, all on your iPhone.

What it is

Open a document and tap Edit in the toolbar at the bottom. A menu opens with:

  • Crop, rotate and filter
  • Reorder pages
  • Add pages
  • Split
  • Merge with…

The first three open the Review screen, the same one you see right after a scan, with this document’s pages in it. Split and Merge with… make new documents and have their own article: Split and merge.

When to use it

  • A page was cut off, or the edges were found in the wrong place.
  • A page is sideways or upside down.
  • A page is too dark, too grey, or you want it in black and white.
  • The pages are out of order, or one page doesn’t belong.
  • You forgot a page, or the second half of a letter arrived later.

Step by step

Crop a page

  1. Open the document and tap Edit → Crop, rotate and filter.
  2. In Review, swipe to the page, or tap its thumbnail in the strip.
  3. Tap Crop.
  4. Drag the corners to the edges of the paper. Auto finds the edges again for you; Full page keeps the whole photo.
  5. Tap Done.

Rotate a page

  1. In Review, go to the page.
  2. Tap Rotate. Each tap turns the page a quarter turn to the right.

Change the look (filter)

  1. In Review, go to the page and tap Filter.
  2. Pick a look: Auto, Original, Magic, Grayscale, B&W or Lighten. A small preview shows each one.

To change the look Paperwise uses for new scans, go to Account → Scanning → Default look.

Retake or delete a page

  • Retake opens the camera to shoot that page again. The new photo replaces it.
  • Delete removes the page from the document.

Put pages in a new order

  1. Tap Edit → Reorder pages. Review opens.
  2. Go to the page you want to move: swipe, or tap its thumbnail.
  3. Tap Reorder in the toolbar. It’s there when the document has more than one page.
  4. Choose Move earlier, Move to first, Move later or Move to last. Repeat until every page is where you want it.

As a shortcut, touch and hold a thumbnail in the strip and choose Move earlier, Move later or Delete page.

Add pages

  1. Tap Edit → Add pages. Review opens and the camera starts straight away.
  2. Scan the new pages. They’re added at the end of the document.
  3. To add more later, tap the + tile at the end of the thumbnail strip. You can choose Scan document, Camera or From Photos.

Save or cancel

  • Tap Save at the top right to keep your changes.
  • Tap Cancel to leave. If you changed something, Paperwise asks “Discard your changes?”: tap Keep editing to go back, or Discard to leave the document as it was.

Free and Pro

Everything on this page is free.

Privacy

Cropping, rotating, filters and new pages are all processed on your iPhone. Nothing is sent to our server. The edited pages are saved encrypted by Paperwise with its own key, kept on this iPhone only; readable copies exist only while you edit. Face ID guards the app when the app lock is on.

If sync (Pro) or the encrypted iCloud backup is on, the updated document is encrypted on your iPhone before it’s uploaded, like any other change.

Tips

  • Scan on a dark, plain surface. Paperwise finds the edges of the paper more easily, so you’ll crop less.
  • Magic works well on receipts and faded print. B&W gives the smallest, sharpest result for plain text.
  • After big changes, check the Text view: Paperwise reads edited pages again on your iPhone.
  • To move one page into another document, use Split to cut it out, then Merge with… to join it to the other one.

What if…

What if I don’t see the Save to Hidden switch?

That switch only appears when you save a new scan. When you edit a document that’s already in your vault, use ••• → Move to Hidden instead. See Protected documents, Never send to AI and Hidden.

What if Auto crop picks the wrong edges?

Drag the corners by hand, or tap Full page and crop from there. Scanning against a contrasting background helps next time.

What if a page is blurry?

Use Retake on that page. Hold the iPhone flat over the paper, in good light, and wait for the camera to focus.

What if I can’t drag pages to reorder them?

Pages don’t move by dragging. Go to the page and tap Reorder in the toolbar, or touch and hold its thumbnail, then choose where it goes.
