The devices list

The devices list shows every iPhone and iPad signed in to your Paperwise account. You can rename the device you’re holding and remove any device you no longer use.

What it is

Open it from Account → Devices (under Use on my iPad), or from the plan card at the top of Account (Plan & account → Devices).

For each device you see:

  • its name. By default this is the model, for example “iPhone 17 Pro”, and (this iPhone) marks the one you’re holding
  • a small bell when it receives notifications
  • when you tap it: when it was added and when it was last seen. “Last seen” is updated about once a day, so it’s a rough guide, not a live status.

An account can have up to 10 devices.

When to use it

  • To check which devices can read your synced items.
  • To remove an old iPhone you’ve sold, given away or lost.
  • To tell two iPads apart by giving one a name.

Step by step

Rename this device

  1. Open Account → Devices.
  2. Tap the device marked (this iPhone).
  3. Tap Rename, type a name and tap Save.

Other devices of your account see this name. You can only rename the device you’re holding.

Note: The name goes back to the device’s model each time you sign in, replacing a name you chose. Rename it again after signing in if you want to.

Remove another device

  1. Open Account → Devices on a device that has your account key.
  2. Tap the device you want to remove.
  3. Tap Remove, then Remove again to confirm.

The removed device stops syncing and stops receiving forwarded email straight away, and it’s signed out.

Remove this device

  1. Tap the device marked (this iPhone) and tap Remove.
  2. Confirm. This signs you out here, and the documents on this iPhone stay on it. To choose whether they stay or are removed, sign out from Plan & account instead: see Sign out.

Free and Pro

The devices list is part of your Paperwise account, which is free. Sync and Forward by email, which are what devices share, are Pro.

Privacy

Privacy: Our server sees each device’s name, its type, when it was added and last seen, and technical details such as its public key and notification token, so it can show you this list and reach your devices. It never sees what’s on a device. Since we can see the name, avoid putting anything personal in it.

What removing a device does and doesn’t do

Removing a device ends its access to your account: it stops syncing, stops receiving forwarded email and is signed out. But be clear about what it can’t do:

  • It keeps what it already has. Documents already on that device stay on it. Removing it doesn’t erase anything there.
  • It still holds your account key. A device that was set up with your account key keeps it after you remove it. Changing your recovery key doesn’t change the account key either. Rotating the account key, so that removing a device also changes it, is planned but not available yet.

If a device was lost or stolen, see If you lose your phone.

Who can remove a device

Removing another device needs your account key, not just a sign-in. Someone who signs in with your Apple ID on their own phone can add that phone to your account (up to the 10-device limit), but can’t remove your devices, sign them out or read your synced items.

Tips

  • Remove devices you no longer use. It keeps the list honest and frees a place under the 10-device limit.
  • If you see a device you don’t recognise, someone has signed in with your Apple ID. Remove it from a device with your account key, and secure your Apple ID with Apple.

What if…

What if I can’t remove a device?

Removing another device must be done from a device that has your account key. If the device you’re using shows Set up this iPhone, set it up first with Add a device by code or your recovery key.

What if I see the same iPhone twice?

Signing in again can sometimes create a new entry for the same device. Remove the older one.

What if my account already has 10 devices?

You’ll need to remove one before you can add another.
