Show Hidden in vault

Free

On this page

By default, Hidden has its own quiet row at the bottom of your Vault, like the Hidden album in Photos. If you’d rather it wasn’t on view, turn off Show Hidden in vault and open it from Account instead.

What it is

Show Hidden in vault is a switch in Account → Lock and privacy. It’s on by default.

On (default) Off
Vault home A Hidden row under More, with a lock icon and no count No Hidden row
iPad sidebar Hidden listed Not listed
How to open Hidden Tap Hidden on the Vault Account → Lock and privacy → Open Hidden

The switch only changes where Hidden is shown. It doesn’t lock, unlock, move or change anything inside Hidden. Hidden always needs Face ID (and your code or pattern, if you use one), whichever way you open it.

When to use it

Turn it off if you’d rather people glancing at your Vault didn’t see that a Hidden area exists, for example when you hand your iPhone to someone to look at a document.

Step by step

Turn off the Hidden row

  1. On the Vault, tap your avatar (top right) to open Account.
  2. Under Lock and privacy, turn off Show Hidden in vault.

The Hidden row disappears from the Vault, and a new row, Open Hidden, appears just below the switch.

Open Hidden while the row is off

  1. Tap your avatar to open Account.
  2. Under Lock and privacy, tap Open Hidden. It asks for Face ID.

Bring the row back

Turn Show Hidden in vault on again.

Free and Pro

Free.

Privacy

  • Hidden’s row never shows a count, so it doesn’t tell anyone how much is in it, with the switch on or off.
  • Hidden items never appear in All items, your folders, shelves or the vault’s search, with the switch on or off.
  • The switch is a convenience, not a lock. Anyone who knows where to look can find Open Hidden in Account; what protects Hidden is Face ID and your Hidden code or pattern.

Tips

  • For a stronger disguise, combine this with the disguised icon (Pro).
  • After you hide a document, Paperwise tells you where to find it: “Vault → Hidden” with the row on, or “Account → Lock and privacy → Hidden” with it off.
  • On iPad, the keyboard shortcut ⌘4 also goes to Hidden, but only while Show Hidden in vault is on. With it off, ⌘4 does nothing and isn’t listed.

What if…

What if Hidden disappeared from my Vault?

Someone (maybe you) turned off Show Hidden in vault. Open it from Account → Lock and privacy → Open Hidden, or turn the switch back on. Your items are still there.

What if I turn it off while Hidden is open?

Nothing inside Hidden changes. Next time, open it from Account.
